Do You Clean BEFORE Company Or AFTER Company?

The date is set on your calendar, you have already figured out what you're going to serve, your guests have confirmed that they are coming.  Now you are faced with this confusing question:

Do you clean BEFORE your guests arrive or AFTER your guests leave?

I do my regular "big" cleaning on Friday.  I will dust and vacuum the rugs (or my kids will) and sweep and mop the floors.  This is my regular Friday routine and I will do this whether we are expecting company that weekend or not.  I just like going into the weekend with a clean house.

If it's during the week and I hear that company is coming over I will do a quick clean.  Not a huge cleaning, but just "company" cleaning.  I will usually run the vacuum really quick to suck up all the dog hair and put clean guest towels in the bathrooms and make sure that the "public" areas are straightened and presentable.  If guests wander off into the bedrooms or open a closet they deserve whatever falls on their head.

Even when we have company over, I still clean up the kitchen after dinner. I don't call that "cleaning after company" as I pretty much always clean up my kitchen after a meal.

I once had a guest say to me "You are the only person I know that cleans up their kitchen while people are still here" (she said she always waits until they leave) and I jokingly said to her "But this way, after you leave I'll be glad you came over instead of facing all those messy dishes and wishing you'd never come, lol!"

It certainly doesn't take long to put the food away and load the dishes in the dishwasher and run it, and I can visit with my friends while I do it. Many of my friends prefer to do their dishes immediately as well, although some have been known to stack them in the sink.

After the company leaves, we then go around and throw away any paper plates or paper cups (if we used them) that were left out while they were here, and return the chairs, pillows, etc. to their proper places if they were moved. But I don't dust or vacuum or anything like that.  Just straightening things and tossing garbage.

So, I think I can say that I do a house preparation and clean BEFORE company and general quick pickup after they leave.

I was talking to a friend of mine and she does her "big" cleaning on Monday.  She wants to recover from the weekend and from its company, she says.  She mops the floors, dusts and vacuums and cleans the bathrooms. She tosses the garbage and straightens the pillows and "digs herself out" of the mess of entertaining.

She is doing a house recovery and cleans AFTER company.

I prep, she recovers.

So, now I am curious.  And my curiosity leads me to ask yet another question.

Are YOU a "before" company prepper or an "after" company recoverer???  Please leave a comment and do tell!

Cooking With Mom's The Word: Quick and Easy Casserole Dish

Welcome to another Cooking With Mom's The Word!  Today we're making Penne Pasta Casserole.  Are you ready? Let's get cooking!

This is a yummy meal and a favorite with our family and it's super easy to make!  You can make it ahead and stick it in the fridge for a few hours or stick it in the freezer for another time.  I get requests from the kids in the church youth group to bring this whenever there's an event where a meal is needed.

I found it on Hunts and here is a link to their recipe.  I make mine a bit different as I'm using the original recipe that I found in a magazine awhile ago, so be sure and check their updated recipe too.

3 cups dry penne pasta
1 pound lean ground turkey (or ground beef)
2 cans (14.5 oz) basil, garlic and oregano diced tomatoes (also known as Italian Style), undrained
1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
4 cups of mozzarella cheese (reserve one cup)

Boil the penne pasta according to the package.  Turn on your oven to 350°F.

Brown the lean ground turkey, drain as needed. Forget to take a picture of it and so grab a blog photo that you've used before.  Feel the need to explain that the meat was previously frozen and that's why it's in that shape.  Realize that people don't really care but tell them anyway.

Once the meat is browned, stir in the diced tomatoes and the tomato sauce.  Bring to a boil and then reduce heat and let simmer (uncovered) for 8 minutes.  Be sure and let a little slop over because it makes a really cute polka-dot effect on your stove.  Stress over whether you should use affect or effect.  Hope no one notices if you chose the wrong one.

Drain the pasta and return it to the same pot.  I would suggest that you spray the bottom of the pot with a little cooking spray first.  You might also want to use a wooden spoon or spray your spoon with cooking spray as well, as the cheese grabs hold and just doesn't want to let go!  Kind of like a toddler with a sucker minus the screaming, tantrum part.

Add the meat mixture to the pasta and stir.  Salivate a little but make sure that you don't drool into the pan.  That's gross.  Stir it well. (The pasta and meat mix, not the drool).

Add only 3 cups of the mozzarella cheese (save the remaining 1 cup) and mix well.  I always add a little at a time and stir it before adding more, but you can do whatever you want.  I promise the mozzarella police will not come out to your home and arrest you.

Put your dirty frying pan into the sink and add some hot sudsy water so you can clean as you go.  Make sure that your husband comes home and asks you why you are taking a picture of your frying pan.  Then make sure that he says "never mind" because he's used to you taking strange pictures for your blog.

Spray a 9x13 pan with cooking spray and add the meat and pasta mixture.  Spread it out and then add the remaining one cup of mozzarella cheese on top. Bake in the oven at 350°F, do not cover.  Bake for 20-25 minutes or until bubbly and cheese is melted.

You now have 20 minutes or so to finish cleaning that kitchen, so wash your dirty pots or place them in the dishwasher and rinse and toss those cans into the recycling.  Then go play on facebook or pinterest or leave me a comment or something.

Tell your family that dinner is ready.  Realize that you're not going to be able to take a "finished" picture for your blog because your family is racing you to the kitchen.  Say "oh well" and enjoy!

Making your home sing Mondays

Welcome to the Making Your Home Sing Monday meme! Every day you are doing something to make your house into a home for yourself and your family (if you have one).

My point with each Monday post is, what are YOU doing or going to do today to make your home sing? It can be an attitude or an action. So have fun, do some blog hopping and if you want, link up!

Topics can include marriage, parenting, encouraging women, organization, cleaning, saving money, our behavior and attitudes, homemaking, homeschooling, recipes....the opportunities are endless.

What have you been putting off lately?  What do you KNOW needs to be done, and yet you're not doing it?

How much time are you spending each day thinking about what you're not doing?

How much stress and energy are you expending on them by thinking about them constantly and maybe even feeling guilty for not doing them?

What are your reasons for not doing each one?  Is it just an unpleasant task?  Are you not sure where to start?  Is it just plain difficult?  Is it just too time consuming?

Is it outside your comfort zone?  Is it too emotionally painful to contemplate?  Are you waiting on someone else to do their part?  Is it boring?  Is it so easy that you know it will only take a few minutes to do so you just keep putting it off?

What's stopping you from doing them and getting it OVER with?

Think of the relief it will be to finally be free!  Imagine not having to start the morning with a list of  previously avoided tasks hanging over your head.

When you have something that you need to do, and you don't do it, all day long you have to continually make the decision NOT to do it.  Over and over. All day long.

You decide not to decide.  You choose not to choose.  And you make the move NOT to make the move.  You are making the same "not now" decision over and over.  And it's costing you.  Decide to decide!

I encourage you to find one thing that you are procrastinating on each day and just DO it and make your home sing this week!

Posts I'm Pretty Sure You'll Never See Me Write

Ever so often I feel the need to do a post about how difficult it is to come up with a post title.

The post title is supposed to lure you all in.  To make you just dying to hop over here to my blog and read my post.

To mesmerize you and thrill you and attract you away from all the other blogs out there long enough to read MY blog post.  And maybe even be moved enough to leave a comment.

The post title is supposed to get you all excited about what you're going to read.  Or give you an idea of what you're going to read or tell you that you will find 10 Ways To Solve Your Problem....or whatever.

How am I supposed to find a relevant blog title for those times when I'm blogging about hairy legs, or pimples, or chocolate?

Half the time I spend more time trying to think up a post title than I do actually writing the post.

It's just too much stress.  Match the post title to the post.  Make sure it's clever and witty.  Oh the pressure!

Sometimes I can come up with a post title.  But then I can't figure out how to write a post that fits it.

So here are some post titles for posts that I'm pretty sure I will never write:

How I Stopped Eating Chocolate

The Day I Got Caught Up On All My Laundry

How To Have A "Perfect Hair" Day Every Day

Why I Cook Every Meal From Scratch

How To Improve Your Memory And....I'm Sorry, What Was I Saying?

Why I Will Never Allow A Computer In My Home Again

How To Train Your Husband To Always Ask For Directions When He Is Lost

How To Keep Yourself From Being Late All The Time: Just Don't Go Anywhere

How To Shave Your Legs Every Day....Especially During The Winter Season

How Not To Spoil Your Dog

How To Stop Your Children From Growing Up

How To Eat Anything You Want And Not Gain An Inch

Why I Love To Exercise

Why I Prefer Vegetables Over Chocolate

So, what are some of YOUR post titles that you will never write?

How come?

Why are m&m's round?  Shouldn't they be in the shape of the letter "M?"

It's questions like this that keep me awake at night.

Why isn't Blue Cheese blue?

How come it stays nice all during the week and then rains only on the weekend?

Why do children hold all their questions until you are in the bathroom or on the telephone?

How come my head doesn't itch at all until someone mentions that their kid has lice - and then all of a sudden mine itches like crazy?

How come I always get a strong urge to cough whenever someone else is coughing?  Same with yawning.

How come I can check all the pockets before I do laundry and they're empty.  Yet somehow, something always winds up in the washing machine.  Usually a wad of tissue.

How come I can fall asleep in front of the t.v., but the minute I get up and go to bed I am suddenly wide awake?

How come I can always think of a brilliant response hours AFTER the conversation is over?

How come I can remember something that happened ten years ago but I can't remember something that happened ten minutes ago?

How come I can go for hours without needing a bathroom at home and yet need one five minutes after we leave in the car?

How come?????  What are YOUR "how come" or "why" questions?

Making Your Home Sing Monday Linkup

Well, I'm back!  No "official" post today, sorry.  Not feeling quite up to 100% but definitely on the mend.  Colds always affect my asthma and I had a fever with this one, so maybe I got my husband's flu instead of a cold.  Not quite sure.  I got a flu shot back in October so who knows what I had.  But my hubby and I no longer have fevers so we're happy.

My mom actually tested positive for both the flu AND pneumonia.  She is where I get my overachiever genes from.  She wasn't happy having just one illness, she had to have two.

However, she is doing better and on some serious antibiotics plus some flu medicine and may actually get out of the hospital tomorrow (which will be today when you read this).

Apparently it takes about two weeks to get over this thing energy-wise, so I suspect I will still be tired this week, but I am breathing much better.  I like breathing.  It's fun.

So I am putting the linky up again.  I was all excited to see you all linking up last week.  Thanks so much!  It's always fun to see what everyone is sharing.  Be sure and visit one another's links!

Sick Again and MYHSM Linkup

I am starting the second week of my cold, or I am starting a second cold.  I don't know if that's even possible but then, I've always tried to be a bit of an overachiever.

It was getting better and now I am back to clogged nasal passages and a cough.  TMI, sorry.

My sweet hubby is working his way through the flu and he almost NEVER gets the flu.  Thursday his fever was up to 103, then it went down to 102 and then Saturday it was 100.  Sunday night it shot back up to 102.  This is one nasty flu, people!

He wasn't able to preach on Sunday at all as he still had a fever and felt pretty tired. Wouldn't want to expose anyone, anyway.

Now I KNOW that you did not come on this blog to listen to me complain about my health.  I'm also pretty sure that you don't want to know that I'm down to one nostril here, folks.  By this evening, I suspect both will be all clogged up (AGAIN) and I will be breathing through my mouth and not sleeping much tonight. And whining.

I hab a code in by doze and I'mb all 'tuffed up.  *cough*sneeze*hack*

I got my flu shot back in October so I'm hoping it will protect me from hubby's flu but I'm not going to count on it.  I thought it was funny that my mother told me "I hope you're staying away from your hubby."  It made me laugh, lol!

So, this week I will be taking care of my hubby and myself, and watching my mom who seems to be coming down with something as well.  If I feel better and feel up to blogging I will.  I have a couple of posts in my drafts folder that just need a little tweaking before I post them so I can always use those if I feel up to editing them!

Taking it easy is how I am going to make my home sing this week.  Have a great week, y'all.

You're The Reason Mommy Can't Have Nice Things

My dog, Kenzie, likes to hang out with me when I'm in the kitchen.  She's always hoping I will drop something and her patience is usually rewarded.

I'm sure she's saying "Please, stop with the pictures already and go cook something and please, if it wouldn't be too much trouble, could you drop some food already?!!  I'm tired of waiting."

"Hey, look what I found!!!  Hmmmmmm.  This doesn't smell very good and green isn't really my color.  It clashes with my eyes.  Oh well.  Let's try the taste test before someone takes it away from me."

"Whaaat? I'm not doing anything. Maybe if I quickly look away and try and look innocent she won't notice anything.  This is me looking away.  See?  I sure wish I could whistle."

"Can I help you with something?  No??  O.k.  Well, you just go ahead and do whatever it is you do.  I'll just sit here and chill in my bed.  No really, I'm fine.  No worries.  No, seriously, I'm FINE.   You don't have to come back and check on me.  I'm not gonna do anything....."

"Finally!!!!!  I thought she'd NEVER leave. Now let's get down to business."

"I'm sorry.  Were you going to USE this????????"

Sometimes I just have to tell my dog...........

"You're the reason mommy can't have nice things!"

(Well, that and the fact that I grabbed the camera instead of taking this away from her.  But no worries, she hasn't chewed anything since!)

Putting Our Own Limits On A God Who Lives Outside of Them

Do you ever put limits on God?

I know I do sometimes.  I just don't dream big enough.  I just don't think big enough.  I just don't pray big enough.

Once my son came to me in tears with a favorite toy.  He believed it was broken and he was devastated.  I fixed it in minutes by popping a few things back in place and putting it back together.  He was shocked and thrilled.

He didn't know that it COULD be put back together again.  It didn't even occur to him that it could be.  He thought it was broken forever.

Sometimes we are afraid that something is broken forever.  Sometimes we are afraid that something can't be fixed.  Sometimes it doesn't even occur to us that it CAN be fixed and so we don't dream.  We don't hope.  We don't pray.

Or, when we do pray, we might try and "help" God out with our ideas of how He should fix everything.

How easy it is to put our own limits on a God who is outside of them.

We put limits on a God who lives outside of limits.

Maybe a relationship is broken forever - but it doesn't mean that WE have to be broken forever.

Maybe a health or finance problem can't be fixed in the way that we want it to be and things are difficult, painful and the future looks scary - it doesn't mean that we have to walk that path alone.  We walk with a God who holds the future (and us) in the palm of His hands.

Maybe a situation is beyond our control - but it's not beyond God's control.

Maybe our dreams are shattered.  Sometimes we have to let our old dreams die and make new dreams.

God thinks bigger than we think.  God sees bigger than we see.  God lives bigger than we live.

I am glad because I live very small.  Too small.

What about you?  Are you living SMALL today?

I was invited to join a "Why I Love My Husband" link up today and I am excited about it, so am joining in at the bottom of this post (since I already posted today).  Why don't you all join too!  Why I Love My Husband (the never-ending list)

1.  Because I know that my heart is safe with him.

2.  Because he hides chocolate around the house and when I'm going crazy craving some he hauls some of it out.

3.  Because he doesn't get mad when he runs out of clean socks and unmentionables (except that I just mentioned them.......) when I am behind in laundry.

4.  Because he's just such a good daddy.

5.  Because he loves my dog.  My poodle dog.  That no one wanted me to buy because she was....you know....a poooooooodle.

I Ride With Door Huggers

Ever so often I'll be driving my car and come up to a turn, and I notice my passenger reaching for the door handle.

Now, anybody else might assume that they are getting ready to leap out of the car, but I know better.

I ride with door huggers.

They appear normal until they are faced with a turn or a curve.

Then their true colors come out and they grab the door handle and hang on for dear life, as if their very life depended on it.  Even if I am taking the curve at practically a crawl.

When I see this I get a desperate desire to take the curve at 90 miles an hour and really shake 'em up a bit.

But since one of them is my 89 year old mother, cooler heads prevail and I maintain good, safe driving habits.

However, the other door hugger is my son and with him it's every man/woman for themselves. He's young, has a strong heart and I am thinking that I am free to give it a whirl.

So next time he rides with me and grabs for the door handle he is going to get the surprise of his life.....

Habit - The Workhorse of Your Cleaning Routine & MYHSM Linkup

In case you're wondering, my bathroom counter is STILL clean today.

So are my kitchen counters.

When you think about it, it all comes down to habit.

Habit is the workhorse of your cleaning routine.

You can spend hours getting your home sparkling clean and neat and orderly.  But if you don't establish habits to KEEP it clean, it won't stay that way.

Not everyone wants an immaculate home.  Not everyone wants to be able to perform open heart surgery on any floor of their home at any given time.

Except me.  I definitely want to be able to do that.

We all have habits and these habits are making or breaking us.  They are moving us towards our goals or away from our goals.  They are helping or hindering us.

What habits do you have when you wake up in the morning?  Do you make your bed?  Check your email?  Make your coffee?  Let the dogs out?

Maybe you have a habit of tossing your pajamas on the bed, leaving your bed unmade, leaving your makeup all over the bathroom counter, dishes in the sink, and a huge mess behind you as you run out the door or begin your day at home.

What about when you come home after being gone much of the day?  Do you leave a trail of shoes, clothing, newspapers, mail, and coffee mugs behind you?  Do you have a set place for your keys and your purse or will you have to hunt for them tomorrow morning? Do you leave tiny little messes everywhere you go?

I'm not saying that this is a bad thing because some people say that they really don't mind the mess in their homes.

However, if YOU do, then your habits are hurting you.

It's a lot harder to function in a mess than it is when things are orderly.  Whether it's trying to cook a meal in a messy kitchen, trying to find your shoes in a messy closet, trying to find the bills in a mound of paperwork, or having to iron your favorite shirt because it got all wrinkled because you didn't hang it up the last time you wore it.

If you don't like coming home to a messy kitchen, going to bed at night in a messy room, find yourself getting frustrated because you can't find any clean counter space in your kitchen or bathroom, then you need to take a closer look at your habits.

So take a good look at your habits today and ask yourself, are they helping you or hurting you?  Establish some good habits, kick the bad habits to the curb and make your home sing this week!

My son, Justin Bieber's "Twin?"

This is a picture of my son.  Some people think he looks like Justin Bieber.  We have heard that a lot over the last couple of years, but recently our trip to California really kicked it into high gear.  We were literally "stalked" by Justin Bieber fans. Or rather, he was and we were just along for the ride.

They were all very nice and sweet and friendly, but girl after girl told him how much he looked like JB. Every.Single.Day that we were there.

For instance, we were eating at one restaurant and noticed a girl in another booth videotaping him while he was eating.

We would walk around Disneyland, California Adventure or Universal and girls would holler "Justin!!!!" at him, and then giggle.

They took pictures of him, videotaped him, followed us around, asked for a picture with him and even asked for his autograph.

We took this picture while our son was busy signing autographs just because it was so amazing to us that they were asking him for it, lol!

He kept telling them that he was NOT Justin Bieber and even though they believed him, they still wanted a picture or a video or even an autograph.

For the record, he is signing his own name in the picture above.

We also visited the wax museum and took lots of fun pictures.  Unfortunately the JB figure was not out the day that we were there.  It would have been a fun picture.

I must say that Justin Bieber has the nicest and sweetest fans.

I had a great time watching the expressions on their faces when they first saw my son.  At first they looked shocked, then excited, then a bit confused.  I think at first glance, they were excited for a moment, but then they realized he wasn't JB when they looked again.

Although he hears it a lot around where we live, I suppose it was the fact that he was at Disneyland and lots more people around, thus more excitement and confusion, lol!

I can see a slight resemblance but not enough to cause all the attention he received. I just don't get it.  He looks like my son to me, lol!

Your Math Teacher Looks Like A Whaaaaat???

So it was a little after 9:00 PM and I was reading through my blog emails and suddenly it hits me......I have a blog!

I have a blog which means I'm supposed to have a blog post for tomorrow (which is today as you read this).  Who knew?

I blame the holidays.  And IKEA and Goodwill and Jimmy John's and my friend Linda.

Because I was hanging with her when I should have been home writing a blog post.  Oh and popcorn.  I blame popcorn too.

So I don't have a blog post for today and probably won't have a great one for Friday either the way my brain is going.

But I will leave you with this lovely conversation I had with my 19 year old son earlier today:

My son:  "Mom, do you remember the orangutan in the "Planet Of The Apes" movie?  My math teacher looks like him."

Me: "Your math teacher looks like an orangutan?"

My son: "Nooooo.  He looks like the actor who PLAYED the orangutan.  Paul Giamatti."

Me:  "Ohhhhh....."

College would probably be a lot more fun if his teacher actually WAS an orangutan.

I also want you to know that I actually had to look up the spelling of orangutan for this post.  Do you know how long it's been since I had to spell orangutan.....if ever?????

So, do you actually know how to spell it?

I do.

I-T.

O.k.  I'm leaving now.  It's going to be a long week.  Come back tomorrow and see if it gets any better......

I Wonder If Facebook Will Bring Me Flowers. And Chocolate. I Like Chocolate.

Not too long ago I logged onto Facebook and in the place where I am supposed to write my status update, it said "How's it going?"

At first I was rather shocked.  Facebook was actually talking to me.  Facebook was interested it how I was feeling.  Facebook cared.

Then I panicked.

This was just too much pressure for me. You mean, I'm supposed to stop and evaluate how things are going????  And then report it back to Facebook?  Is this a test?  Will I be graded?  Will I be fired?

I suppose it's better than "What's on your mind?" or "What are you thinking?" because then I freak out and say to myself  "I'm supposed to be THINKING????"

I went on another time and it was asking "How are you feeling, Nan?"  I didn't notice the "Nan" before.  I really feel that this is just a bit too pushy.  I mean, I didn't realize that Facebook and I were on a first name basis.   We haven't even been out on a first date yet.

I wonder if Facebook will bring me flowers.  And chocolate.  I like chocolate.

Not only that, it's asking me how I am feeling so I know that that means Facebook is planning on breaking up with me and it's checking out my emotional stability beforehand.

We haven't even had our first date yet and Facebook has already doomed our relationship.  Nice.  Come on, Facebook, can't we work through this?  I made your favorite dinner.......

So then it asked "How are you doing?"  Again, I panicked.  Frankly, it's got me worried.

What is it really trying to say?  Do I look sick?  Am I sick?  What does it know that I don't know?

Facebook, you're starting to worry me. I thought about checking Google because every time that I google anything health related I come away with more potential diseases than I knew existed.

Along with the possibility that I probably have five of them and only have minutes to live.

Tonight I popped on and Facebook is asking "What's your New Year's resolution?"

None of your business Facebook.  You're not the boss of me!!!!!

Then, to top it all off, I couldn't decide if I should capitalize Facebook for this post or not because it uses the lowercase "f" in its logo and URL and stuff.  Except Facebook is also a proper noun and proper nouns are supposed to be capitalized.

So then, Facebook made me think again.  Facebook you so owe me.
